This study examines the more important commentaries on the encyclical “Veritatis splendor” that have appeared during the year following its publication. An overview is given of the things written about it in the French-speaking nations, Italy, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Austria and the Spanish-speaking nations. The author also presents a close reflection on the concept of moral autonomy, bringing out what the encyclical affirms about the due autonomy of practical reason, and considering the fundamental elements of the theories that it criticizes, particularly those of Merks and Böckle.
